What is a Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction is the complete removal of a tooth from the mouth. Our Lethbridge dentists provide tooth extractions for wisdom teeth, and teeth that are too badly damaged to save.
General Extractions
You want to keep your teeth for a lifetime, but circumstances can arise that prompt your dentist to recommend removing a tooth for the good of your dental health.
Teeth are usually extracted due to trauma, disease or crowding. As a general rule, when a tooth cannot be repaired with a filling or a crown because of an accident or extensive decay, an extraction may be your best recourse.
Teeth that are no longer supported by enough bone as a result of gum disease and infected teeth that don't respond to root canal treatment may need to be taken out, as well.
Wisdom Teeth Extractions
Wisdom teeth emerge later in life than the other teeth, and this can cause problems.
Their position in the back of the mouth makes them difficult to clean, resulting in decay. And because there is often not enough room in the mouth for them, they can also become impacted, or may not erupt fully. In these cases, having the wisdom teeth extracted can help preserve a healthy mouth.
